Makes 2 loaves.
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 6 cups bread flour
Instructions
- Dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl, then stir in the yeast. Let stand until yeast forms a creamy foam, about 5–10 minutes.
- Mix oil and salt into the yeast mixture.
- Mix in flour one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 7–8 minutes.
- Place dough in a well-oiled bowl, turning to coat all sides. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch down dough, then knead for a few minutes. Divide in half.
- Shape each half into a loaf and place into two well-oiled 9×5-inch loaf pans.
- Let rise until dough is about 1 inch above the pans, about 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and loaves sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Optional: brush tops with melted butter for a soft crust.
- Let cool before slicing.
